Wellness Centers Wellness programs are designed to promote health and general wellness. Some centers are open for everyone, from people who just want relax to recovering addicts who want to heal, and some are specifically designed for formerly addicted individuals.

Default Drug users stuck in a cycle of addiction and crime

A report by the Healthcare Inspectorate Wales found that long waiting times and poor access to substance abuse programmes are connected to reasons why drug users are stuck in a cycle of addiction and crime. The report also found that drug users are being treated in below standard facilities.

Additionally, the report found in their review of substance misuse treatment programmes that the Welsh Assembly Government’s strategic vision and objectives are not being “consistently attended to or delivered”

I have read the news story regarding this one, and I have to quote what I think says everything in a nutshell:

“This report identifies very well intentioned national frameworks but show that locally these aspirations are not being delivered.”

One in three people who have responded to the HIW survey said they had experienced difficulties in accessing services because of the distance and cost of travel.

Very true. And something needs to be done about this.

How do you solve problems like this? We simply need to invest more on services and facilities that will help addicts get over their addiction and take drugs off their systems.

Hi Newleaf.

That is great insight, but the focus of the discussion was the relapse, or addicts getting addicted again and again, and committing crime to feed their habits. Not getting addicted in the first place.

Ahh, that seems to be the problem, isn't it?

They need to make the programs accessible by making it available locally so that people would not have to travel far. But as it is, they are already having problems implementing the programs on the few centers they have now. What a dilemma!

I think that it is sad that it is bureaucracy that is making the problem worse than it already is. Substance abuse programs should be a right that every one has and to make it difficult to attain them should be punished by law. Also standardized treatment should be a priority. No wonder some treatment programs are failing!

I know this is a big problem, but this could easily be solved by more funding, getting somebody who is very knowledgable and authoritative to overhaul the programmes if needed, get more staff in and get more quality control. But let's just start with more funding!

The thing is, it's easy for you to say more funding, getting an expert to review the programs, more staff etc, but it all boils down to money. Sadly, the US government does not think that rehabilitating addicts should be on the top of its priorities list.

Hello Blender,

Thanks for your information regarding the findings from Health Inspectorate Wales. Technically, I have believed what the findings indicate. If that's really truth, it is not understandable why the concerned authority is not much concerned about the life of drug abusers.
