Default Better alternative to Prozac in fighting depression

Depressed patients who rely on anti-depressant drugs Prozac or Paxil can say goodbye to these drugs and to their side effects as Montreal researchers have found that Omega-3 supplements can do the job with less risks. The study found that depression symptoms decreased among depressed patients who didn't also suffer from an anxiety disorder.

What exactly is Omega-3? I have noticed the "Omega 3" sign on certain food products like oats, tomato sauce, and canned tuna.

Omega 3 is a fish oil supplement that contains high concentrations of EPA, the fats found in fish.

Well, certain other studies have already suggested that a deficit in polyunsaturated fatty acids of the Omega-3 group may predispose certain people to disorders such as depression. So I guess these studies and the one done by the Montreal researchers have related with other.

Does that mean that depressed people will feel better about themselves and about the world in general if they adopt a diet of fish which are high in Omega-3 fatty acids?

I don't think so. The study used a fish oil supplement that contained higher concentrations of Omega-3 than is available from an average diet. Researchers made it clear that it is difficult to study whether dietary intervention could prevent depression or other diseases because it is complicated in a controlled setting. They still suggest that depressed patients who want to try the Omega-3 supplements should first consult with their doctor.

This is certainly good news and it is worth a try. Omega3 has also been proven to be good for the heart, so in addition to fighting depression, you also take care of your heart.

I do wish they'd find out for certain if this is really the case. This is a good way to PREVENT depression, not treat it. But still if you don't have depression you won't need Paxil and other anti-depressants that you could get addicted to!

Is that why I feel happy when I think of tuna? Seriously, this is a great discovery because omega-3 is naturally found in fish like tuna and salmon. What about anxiety, does it help anxiety as well?

So you have to get more polyunsaturated fatty acids to avoid getting depressed. It seems that the researches might be correct in saying that omega 3 prevented depression.

In any case, this would surely hurt prozac sales
