There are quite a lot of alcoholics in my family, some of whom are seeking treatment (others are heading downhill fast). Putting down the bottle is extremely difficult for them. My aunt, for example, has been combating alcoholism for several decades. She's a good person with a good heart, but it's honestly a challenge that bothers her on an hourly basis. She also has serious problems with gambling. There are also plenty of people in my family who drink to much on occasion, but can go weeks or months without any difficulty or withdrawal effects.

Do some people just have an "addictive personality"?

Yes some people are really predisposed to get addicted to whatever substance or behavior they get involved in. Also it has been found that former addicts are more prone to get addicted to other substances as well.
