| Cocaine Extracted from the leaves of the coca bush, cocaine is one of the most popular drugs in the market, with cocaine use growing by the day. In the U.S alone, the increasing number of cocaine addicts has given the cocaine market an estimated street value of over $70 billion dollars. That's a lot of demand for cocaine, which essentially guarantees that the drug will remain in supply and addiction will continue to be a problem. |

The National Institutes of Health has given researchers at Marquette University a $1.4 million grant for research in cocaine addiction and treatment. Already the researchers at Marquette have been trying to develop chemicals to help break the addiction. Marquette is said to be working with other universities in the area for the study.

This is good news. I particularly know how difficult it is to get funding these days, having worked for a non-profit group that researches on drug addiction and treatments.

$1.4 million seems to be a very small sum. How long is the grant going to last?

Two years.
Also, Marquette is working with scientists at the Stanford Research Institute, the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, and the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill for this research. |

I agree that $1.4 million seems to be a bit small. I've read about the efforts of Marquette University. These chemicals they are working on is targeted at interfering with the addiction process. They have also been studying on the chemical changes in the brain that is caused by cocaine and is highly suspected to be the cause of addiction.

I think that the Marquette researchers are aiming to understand the chemical changes more in the hopes that they'd get to understand the bodily changes that lead to addiction. And once they find out what chemicals are responsible for cocaine addiction then it would be possible break the addiction.
