| Sober Living Homes Sober living houses are often mistakenly referred top as "halfway houses". In truth, sober living homes are actually are continuing treatment centers that provide affordable, alcohol and drug free environments, all in support of a recovering addict's alcohol or drug rehabilitation efforts. |

I heard about a program where the state buys or leases your home to turn it into a group home/halfway house. I am interested in selling my house and thought I would offer it since it is so big. However, I cannot find a phone number of any sort, and do not know who I would need to contact to make this offer. I live in the state of Pennsylvania. If anyone knows who I can contact, would you please let me know? A phone number or a website, either will be fine. Thank you!

Sino, try contacting a local AA chapter. They could probably point you in the right direction. If they don't have a contact person for you they could probably tell you who would be able to assist you.

The social services office in your local area should have all the information you would need to look into that program. To tell you the truth that doesn't sound like a bad idea if you have extra property. I'm sure the government would pay you a generous rent for the use of your property considering how much they spend on everything else.
If there is no government support in you area you could always look into a private organization, I'm sure there are least a dozen that work with halfway houses. |

how about starting a halfway house yourself
it might be a good business for you granting you have the qualifications or get people who are qualified.

I would think there would be hefty insurance costs associated with running this type of business. I know it is unfortunate to talk about, but I bet there are more than a few cases where people die in these places and their are the families they may sue for millions of dollars for malpractice or negligence or something similar to that. Although I have never run a business like this so I guess I would know all the details.

So yes, negligence and litigation is an ever-present threat. This should help you put things in perspective of just how difficult it is to run treatment centers. |

I think that it is a very difficult thing to start a halfway house or any treatment center of some sort. For one, you would have to have the proper training to help addicts and other patients. For another, you need to be committed to what you do. Some people think that rehab centers, sober living homes and treatment centers are profitable and easy to run, but that is not always the case.

I really don't think this is a function of your local AA chapter. And I think that with home prices as low as they are now, a lot of people would jump at the opportunity to sell their houses to the government.

I agree with you on that. On top of the responsibility to properly and adequately treat your patients, you also need to make sure that they don't become worse off. You need to make sure that you are helping them, not the other way around.
