What is Ativan prescribed for? I see that it is a depressant but what illness is this used for exactly?

Ativan is used in many cases as a sedative for patients. I've also read that it can be very habit forming.

It is used as a short term treatment for treating excessive anxiety.

Our doctor gave these to my wife for about a week when our son passed away. I wouldn't take anything because I have such an addictive personality but I sure came close. I still have cravings and I have to fight my addiction every day, especially when I'm stressed.

What exactly does excessive anxiety feel like? I feel nervous throughout the day, but I thought that was just stress? I mean its the usualy worries I thought everyone has...mloney problems, family problems, thigns like that. How do you know when you should ask your doctor asbout ativan?

Lorazepam is used for the management of anxiety disorders, the short-term relief of symptoms of anxiety or anxiety associated with depression. The effectiveness of lorazepam and other benzodiazepines has not been adequately studied for treatment beyond 4 months. Lorazepam is effective for insomnia, panic attacks, and is used in combination with other medications to prevent nausea and vomiting resulting from chemotherapy. Lorazepam also is administered before anesthesia and used for prevention and treatment of alcohol withdrawal.

It used to be common for panic attacks/anxiety but not so much anymore
