What is Demerol primarily prescribed for? Is it used mainly for pain relief?

A friend of mine had Demerol when she was in labor. She said the drug wasn't really much of a pain reliever since she was still in pain while in labor. But the doctor assured her she'd be able to sleep a bit (because she was up the entire night), and it would make the dilation progress faster. She did regret it, though. She said she was in this sleepy, dreamy state during delivery.

Well Demerol (meperidine) is a drug that belongs to a group known as narcotic pain relievers and is similar to morphine. Taking it dulls the pain perception center of the brain. This drug is used to treat pain, from moderate to severe. It is also used often for surgery and pain relief during labor and delivery.
