Exercise Addiction Exercising is healthy. Exercising to the point of dependency and compulsion is not, because those are the signs of exercise addiction.

Default How much is to much?

How much exercising is considered too much and an addiction? I know people who go to the gym 5 or 6 times a week, they actually don't really like going to the gym, they just go and workout to get it over with.

I guess there are people who go 7 days a week.

I think "too much" is a circumstantial level.

For example, the amount of exercise a professional athlete is expected to regularly put in would be way too much for a working mom (unless her work is being an athlete) because it would negatively affect other areas of her life.

It is too much when it starts negatively affecting your life, especially your health, but areas such as school, work, and relationships as well. What's the point of being fit if you have no loved ones and no livelihood? I know that's extreme but some people unfortunately reach that point.

I used to work out for hours and hours a day, 7 days a week, and I was alot more obsessed with my weight. I do about 1-2 hours per day now but it works well for me.

I agree with jellyfish, it can only be a problem when it adversely affects you or your family. I had a friend who was "addicted" and this just meant that she felt really good and "high" when she was exercising so she did it as much as she could. She was very slim and muscular so didn't need to do as much as she did, but it was an enjoyable thing for her, however she did not have children to neglect and her husband was happy for her to do it.

I have never heard of exercise being a possible addiction. But, I can definitely see where it could be a possibility. I have seen some people who look unhealthy because they are so skinny. They eat, but then they go and work it off. It is important to remember moderation in anything we do. Too much exercise can kill you.

I try to exercise in moderation, I usually go 2 to 3 times a week. I think it is good to stay in shape, but there is a point where you risk injuring your body if you work out too much.

I believe that would be relative to how you spend the rest of your time. If you go and exercise up to six times a day while ignoring your diet, work and everything else, then it is too much. However, if short periods are used to exercise during the course of the day, even when it's on multiple occasions, it will only help you and not hinder you.
