Default How porn affects your brain

Well, it's official. Porn addiction does have a physical reason: dopamine. Dr. Donald Hilton at the Department of Neurosurgery at the University of Texas Health Sciences Center says that dopamine is released by viewing porn, and the more you use it, the more desensitized your brain gets. Hence, the more porn you need to get the same amount of pleasure!

Yeah, I've read about this. It seems that porn addiction is like heroin, where in you need to get more and more of the drug over time to get the same high.

But unlike heroin where you only increase the dosage, you need more shocking images with porn. This is the reason why while you started out ogling breasts, you found yourself wanting more and proceeded to watch couples have sex, and then to animals and other more shocking things even child porn!

Porn addiction seems to be on the news a lot these day. It seems that recent findings from the Journal of Adolescent Research have found that 87% of college men and 31% of college women are addicted to porn. So it's not really just a man's thing!

Well, I have heard about that dopamine thing, what is scarier is that the brain also produces oxytocin. When you have sex, oxytocin is secreted by your body and helps your form emotional bonds with whoever you are having sex with. If you watch too much porn, that bond loses its meaning and you become less attached to your family and real relationships. This is the reason why the porn addict could easily walk away from their families if they present a threat to their porn viewing.

Porn addicts are also more prone to become dissatisfied with their sexual relationships and have unfulfilled sex lives. For the most part, it is because of the absence of this bond that deters them from having a fulfilling sex life!

Ah, dopamine again. It seems that all psychological addictions have something to do with pleasure. Unlike substances that seems to start off as a way to stop pain, psychological addictions are associated with pleasure.

This is interesting.

I think that the problem with oxytocin is not related to addiction. It is more of a relationship problem than an addiction problem.

This is a good explanation why men and women who watch porn tend to get bored with the "usual stuff".

as a quick reply, I've watched porn since i was 12 because my dad had it in the VCR player, i'm 26 now. Recently I stopped watching it for about 2 months and started up again. Usually it took anywhere between 15min to 1.5 hours to really get off though a lot of times i would prolong it because I wanted to keep watching. When I started again, it really only took like 30 seconds to 5 minutes. So...for me anyway, seems like homeostasis triumphs over the dopamine effect. HOWEVER, this doesn't really say a whole since I've been doing it again for about 2 months and i'm back to around 20-40 minutes before I get off. :/ Also, i believe that a focused attention to what I like in porn has desensitized me to real sex...though this has not been confirmed because I've both enjoyed sex without any stimulation i normally get from porn(big boobs, bouncy skin), and then times I haven't. More later...
