Cigarettes Cigarette smoking is one of the most widespread of all vices. Each year 5.5 trillion cigarettes are produced globally and consumed by more than 1.1 billion cigarette smokers. Clearly anti-smoking campaigns are not enough to keep children and loved ones safe from cigarette addiction.

Default Kids and smoking

Here is a news article on smoking and kids:

Smoking 'is a childhood addiction'
(UKPA)

Health campaigners said smoking is a "childhood addiction" as they backed Scottish Government plans aimed at curbing the number of youngsters taking up the habit.

ASH Scotland said that 15,000 young Scots start smoking every year. But the group`s leaders argued proposed new legislation which includes a ban on tobacco displays in stores could "help stop the advertising of tobacco to children".

Sheila Duffy, the chief Executive of ASH Scotland, spoke out ahead of MSPs debating the general principles of the Tobacco and Primary Medical Services (Scotland) Bill.

I can't believe that they have only started to see smoking as a childhood addiction over there.

We all know that kids as young as 14 start to smoke.

I blame the advertisers. It is great now that they banned advertisements everywhere. And they put up those warning labels on each pack.

That's true, but how many smokers are actually dissuaded by the surgeon general's warning? Not too many I think.

I think that most people are quitting smoking because of social pressures. They know about its dangers to health but they won't stop. They know about the harm it brings to those around them, and they won't stop. But if a wife or a friend starts pressuring him to stop, not to mention that smokers now are highly marginalized that they are told to go outside, that is what makes people double stop and rethink their smoking.

I agree. But you have to consider that it is an addiction.

It's great that movies now do not feature its main stars smoking. I was watching a Greta Garbo film and was appalled when she smoked in many of its scenes. Young people think it's cool!

Well, it's not. But still the incidence of teenage smoking here is still quite high. More should be done about it!
